How to improve your video engagement score.

An engagement score is only useful if it moves for reasons you can act on. NeuroVidz’s read is built from three measured components — how hard the modeled brain response moves, what the content itself delivers, and the emotional arc the audio carries. Here are the five edits that reliably move those components, whether you’re cutting a Reel, a podcast clip, or a song teaser.

1. Win the first three seconds — visibly and audibly

Attention is decided before your first sentence finishes. Open on the most charged moment you have: movement, a face, a claim, a beat. And don’t neglect the soundtrack of the hook — a clip that opens with dead air asks the viewer’s brain to wait, and it won’t. If your best moment is at 0:14, your edit probably starts at 0:14.

2. Find the mid-clip dip and cut it, don’t bridge it

Almost every draft has a stretch where focus drifts — usually the setup you felt obligated to include. The read shows the exact second attention slips. The fix is rarely “make it better”; it’s “make it shorter.” Tighten the middle beat and lead with the payoff.

3. Give the audio an arc, not a level

A clip whose sound sits at one emotional level reads as monotone — and monotone is where engagement goes to die. Quiet verse, building bridge, chorus, climax: movement in the heard emotion is itself a signal the brain rewards. When we fixed our own audio read to hear this properly, the difference between a dynamic song and a flat one became one of the widest gaps the system measures.

4. Don’t end flat

The last seconds decide the feeling people carry out of the clip — and whether they act on it. A fade that lingers past the emotional close costs you; a clip that ends one beat after its peak keeps the energy attached to your call-to-action.

5. Measure, edit, re-measure

Treat the score like a compile step, not a verdict. Run the cut, make the one edit the recommendations point at, run it again. The score’s components are shown transparently — measured signal, content judgment, heard emotional arc — so you can see which lever your edit moved. How the whole read works is on the methods page.
